Macedonian government approves constitutional changes

The government of the Republic of North Macedonia at its meeting today examined and adopted the text of the Proposal for the constitutional amendments and decided to submit the document to the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, reports BGNES. "The proposal for proceeding with the amendment of the Constitution was prepared by a working group composed of experts, prominent professors from several universities in the country, as well as representatives of political parties, with unanimous support for the content of the text, after which it was included in the agenda of today's government meeting on the proposal of the Ministry of Justice," the statement said.

North Macedonia, in line with its strategic determination for full membership in the European Union, is determined to fulfill the obligations undertaken in the framework of the negotiations and the negotiations for the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia with the European Union, which began with the holding of the first Intergovernmental Conference held on 19.07.2022.

The amendments concern the addition of parts of nations in the Preamble and Articles 49 and 78 of the Constitution. That is to say, in the wording... add: the Bulgarian people, the Croatian people, the Montenegrin people, the Slovenian people...".

"Accordingly, an amendment has also been made in the Community Relations Commission to maintain the parity of representatives in Parliament of all communities as so defined in the preamble of the Constitution," the RSM government said.

Call for European consensus

"For all these reasons, the Government expects constructiveness from all political entities represented through MPs in Parliament, good faith from all MPs and a focus on achieving cross-party consensus in the adoption of constitutional amendments as part of the negotiating framework with the European Union," the release added. / BGNES
